Bishwadeep Dipak Chatterjee, a member of the 2018 Oscar Academy class, is a four-time National Award Winner for the films Madras Café (2014), Bajirao Mastani (2016), URI – The Surgical Strike 2019 and Children of the Soil (non-feature category) 2019. He also holds a degree in sound engineering and recording from the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune.

 

The late Rituparno Ghosh’s “Chokher Bali,” Rajkumar Hirani’s “Lage Raho Munnabhai,” “3 Idiots,” and “Sanju”; Pradeep Sarkar’s Parineeta; Shoojit Sarkar’s “Madras Café” and “Piku”; Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Bajirao Mastani” and “Padmavat”; Aditya Dhar’s “URI The Surgical Strike”; Tannishtha Chatterjee’s “Roam Rome Mein,” Ajay Devgan’s “Runway-34,” Ayan Mukherjee’s “Barhmastra,” and Om Raut’s “Adipurush” are among the feature films for which he has designed and mixed sound.

In addition, Bishwadeep Chatterjee has received 4 Filmfare, 5 IIFA, 4 Screen, 2 Producers’ Guild, 3 Zee Cine, and 1 GIMA award. In addition, he received the Goa State Award for Sound Design of the Konkani Film “K Sera Sera” and the West Bengal State Award for Contribution to Cinema.
He has a history of introducing and bringing in novel approaches to recording techniques. As a music engineer, some of his most prestigious projects have included television serials like “Chanakya,” “Junoon,” and “Swabhiman,” music albums like “Ab Ke Sawan” (by Shantanu Moitra and Shubha Mudgal), “Dooba-Dooba” (by Silkroute), films like “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam” and “Devdas” directed by Sanjay Bhansali, and “Munnabhai MBBS” directed by Rajkumar Hirani.

Over his somewhat more than three-decade career, he has essentially worked in every sound department for feature films, short films, documentaries, television series, commercial films, and music albums.
In addition to designing and installing multiple recording studio installations, including six of his own, Bishwadeep has also provided consulting services. He has also given talks and participated in workshops at a number of private universities as well as FTII in Pune and SRFTI in Kolkata. He has given master classes on sound design for films at the IFFI (Goa) and PIFF (Pune) upon invitation.
Along with his partner Nihar Ranjan Samal, Bishwadeep Chatterjee founded TAFA (Timbreworx Advanced Film Audiography), an institute that offers specialised training in film audio.
